Shared Lives Regulation & Legislation

Shared Lives is one of a range of social care services provided for people assessed under the National Health Service and Community Care Act 1990.

Shared Lives is regulated in England Wales and Northern Ireland under the Care Standards Act 2000 and in Scotland under the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001.

The legislation brought into being a range of safeguards intended to protect people in receipt of social work and social care services. Details of the legislation can be obtained on www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2000 and www.scotland.gov.uk/library3

The impact of regulation on Shared Lives has varied in all four countries. NAAPS has been instrumental in influencing the development of regulations and standards in all four countries and has also been involved in the development of methodology for registration and inspection of SL Schemes.
