Carer Membership
If you have been approved as a Shared Lives Carer by a Shared Lives Scheme that
meets government regulatory requirements and you continue to be supported and
monitored by that Scheme we can offer you full Carer membership of NAAPS. Carer
membership and benefits are equally available to SL Support Carers approved by
an SL Scheme.
Your membership will entitle you to:
- A regular NAAPS Newsletter giving up-dates and information about Shared Lives related
issues
- Use NAAPS telephone or email helpline for Carers provided by Judith Holman NAAPS
National Carer Support and Development tel: 0151 2273499 or email judith@naaps.org.uk
-
Contact with experienced SL Carers (called SL Carer contacts) in each area who
work on a voluntary basis and are a first port of call for other Carers wanting
information or support.
-
Take advantage of a range of different kinds of insurance tailor-made for Shared
Lives Carers and available at extremely competitive rates
- Have the opportunity for contact with Carers from other Shared Lives Schemes
- Attend Branch meetings - a good opportunity to meet other SL Carers and find
out what is happening with SL services in your own region
- Become involved in a range of working groups that NAAPS runs to look at what
we need to do to make SL arrangements work better for service users, for Carers
and for Schemes.
- Have your views as an SL Carer represented through NAAPS at meetings with government
and regulatory bodies
- Buy NAAPS publications at membership rates
- Attend NAAPS conferences and courses at membership rates
- Have an opportunity to shape NAAPS through voting at the AGM and EGM
It is largely in response to queries and concerns raised by SL Carers through
the helpline that much of NAAPS recent and current work has developed.
Some of NAAPS recent achievements include:
- A simplified Tax agreement resulting in many SL Carers no longer being liable
to pay tax.
- Fire Safety Regulations that take into account that SLCarers live in ordinary
family homes.
- Agreeing qualification and learning requirements in England apppropriate for
SL Carers.
- Exemption from the requirement to register as a food business.
- Exemption from the requirement to register as a House in Multiple Occupation
(does not apply in Scotland).
- Clear legislation to exempt SL Carers from Capital Gains Tax when selling their
homes.
Work that NAAPS is currently involved in with and for Carers includes:
- Good Practice Guidelines on SL Carer payments and conditions
- Good Practice Guidelines on supporting people to manage their money
- Lobbying with partners against day service cuts
- Guidance on the use of transport and motability allowances in Shared Lives
